Kumarakom
The village of Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake in Kerala, Kumarakom's soil is extremely fertile due to proximity to a water source (Vembanad Lake) which has resulted in the growth of a wide variety of flora (mangrove and coconut trees). Further, Vembanad Lake is home to several species of marine life; 'Karimeen' (Pearl Spotted Fish), 'Chemeen' (Prawns) and 'Konju' (Tiger Prawns). Kumarakom is also the habitat of several migratory birds, owing to the availability of a safe nesting area provided by the trees and a close source of food and water - the Vembanad Lake. The authorities have successfully protected the birds and their habitat by developing a bird sanctuary which spans 14 acres (57,000 mē). Today, Kumarakom is one of the most popular destinations in Kerala and the lake and the backwaters/inlets are the main attractions. Today, Kumarakom is witnessing unprecedented increase in international tourism. Travelers prefer to laze around on houseboats, get a relaxing Ayurvedic massage and sip on some cashew fenny.
